Introduction:
On July 23, 2007, Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich signed Senate Bill 500, also known as the Smoke Free Illinois Act, into law becoming the 19th state in the U.S. to go smoke-free.
According to Section 15 of the new Public Act 095-0017, "Smoking in public places, places of employment, and governmental vehicles prohibited. No person shall smoke in a public place or in any place of employment or within 15 feet of any entrance to a public place or place of employment. No person may smoke in any vehicle owned, leased, or operated by the State or a political subdivision of the State. Smoking is prohibited in indoor public places and workplaces unless specifically exempted by Section 35 of this Act."

Some common questions regarding the new law that have been asked include:
Where will smoking be prohibited? No smoking inside restaurants and bars, within 15 feet of building openings and in all workplaces. Businesses may also choose to allow smoking in unenclosed outdoor areas as long as the areas are 15 feet from interior building openings.
Where will smoking be allowed? Smoking may still be permitted in tobacco shops and some hotel rooms. Smoking is also still permitted in outdoor seating at restaurants so long as the diner is seated at least 15 feet from an entrance to the interior of the restaurant.
What are the fines for smoking violations?
Fines for individuals in violation of the law will be $100 to $250, and $250 for first-time business violations.
